Caregiver Testimonials

"My wife, Molly, was a client at New Horizons Adult Day Center after she suffered a devastating stroke at the age of 47 that rendered her totally and permanently disabled. After nearly a year of hospitalization and residential rehabilitation, she came home to an uncertain future. Because I needed to continue to work full-time in order to support us, I had to find Molly an adult day center that addressed her specific needs. However, there were few options for brain-injured younger adults in central Iowa, and so I placed her initially in a day program designed primarily for elderly Alzheimer’s victims.

We decided to give New Horizons a try because it serves many younger adults, both stroke survivors like Molly and survivors of traumatic brain injury. Since enrollment into the New Horizons Adult Day Center within months, the difference in Molly’s participation has made in our lives is significant. New Horizons has elderly clients but the peer relations with the younger adults are a source of enjoyment and a social advantage of greater interaction with her peer group. But she also benefits from a staff with considerably more experience working with traumatic and acquired brain injury survivors, people who’s needs and capabilities in many differ from those with Alzheimer’s disease."

"You get so involved with the daily care and making sure the medications are given and that Mom is dressed and she eats right that you forget about stimulating her mind. You don’t have the normal conversation you would with another adult that wasn’t challenged. New Horizons Adult Day Center became a highlight for my mom after the first week. She became so excited after the first visit. She came home and said, “They talk about current events there. We’ve been very impressed and grateful."

"First of all, my family and I would like to say “Thank you so much” for all you do for Charles and me. You and your organization have been a “God Send” to me and my family.

New Horizons has been a lifesaver to us when Charles was diagnosed with dementia in the moderate stage. He was becoming increasingly difficult for me to manage and my daughter contacted the Alzheimer’s Association to seek advice. We sought medical treatment and even place Charles on the waiting list at the local nursing home in Ankeny, Iowa. Meanwhile, we learned of New Horizons Adult Day Center in our church bulletin and contacted the Director, Jeanne Silvers. We felt that part of the problem was Charles’ lack of contact with individuals outside our immediate family and he was bored, depressed and felt a lack of self worth.

With your help, Jeanne, we got Charles into the New Horizons program and we cannot express enough our appreciation of help we have received. Charles looks so forward to “going to work” as he calls it. He loves the staff and it has changed and helped him and our family in countless ways. He interacts with others, his mind is stimulated, and he exercises and dances, eats a noon meal and even takes a nap as needed. It gives me a break and relief from his care from this heartbreaking condition.

New Horizons has prolonged indefinitely putting Charles into a care center and our family would again like to say “Thank you” to you and your wonderful staff-what a wonderful organization!!!"
